Each time I visit Sydney, all my activities mostly revolve around the same things: art, beaches, and food. Ringing in the New Year in Sydney is no exception, apart from maybe a few bonus fireworks being thrown into the mix. Despite an 11 hour road trip each way ( because that’s what happens when you leave your travel plans to the last minute) a short stay in Sydney was just what I needed to start the New Year afresh.
Museum of Contemporary Art
The MCA is always on my hit list when I’m in Sydney. For my visit I was really excited to see ‘Sip My Ocean’ by Pipilotti Rist. I found the entire experience strangely soothing and if you ever have the chance to go to a Pipilotti Rist exhibition I would highly recommend it. Also pictured is the Jon Campbell exhibition (second last photo) and some squiggles on the floor because why not?
NYE Fireworks
What’s New Year’s Eve without some fireworks? Luckily for me I was able to spend it at a friend’s place on the Harbour. While we didn’t get views of the Harbour Bridge or Opera House, we were still able to see the fireworks and ring in the New Year in a prime location.
Beaches
Summer in Sydney means fighting the crowds for a spot on many of its pristine beaches. Bronte Beach was my pick along with what seemed like the rest of Sydney (I shudder to think what Bondi would have been like).
Harbour Walks
Not even the “secret” harbour beaches were spared by the New Years crowds. I didn’t realise that New Year’s Day on the harbour was such a *thing*. So what was intended to be a quiet walk along the harbour ended up being an exercise in people/boat watching with a dance-heavy soundtrack courtesy of all of the boats and Catalina’s sound system.
Food
Because we visited over the New Year’s break, I’d recommend researching what dining options are available during your visit. For the most part, many places are still open over the New Year in Sydney. Our accommodation was just up the road from Bourke Street Bakery which was both a blessing and a curse (for my waistline).
