yen issue 64

In my latest instalment of magazines I’ve bought so you don’t have to we have issue 64 of Yen. This issue is a double whammy since it also comes with a bonus back issue – I scored issue 57 with Megan Washington on the cover and a free CD – yay! I rarely buy Yen but I couldn’t resist the colourful cover featuring Tavi. My last experience buying a magazine based purely on the cover didn’t turn out so well but this issue of Yen is chock full of great content. For starters this is the Photo Issue, so there’s plenty of photography talk. There’s also a profile on Tavi, a band interview with Haim, a look at John Shearer’s 1970s photographs of New York gang the Reapers, an article on Lou Doillon, and an editorial of denim on denim on denim looks. And I’m only just getting started. If you’ve got a spare ten bucks then this issue is one that I’d actually recommend buying.

In one interview (pictured above) there was a quote by war photographer Francesco Zizola that particularly struck me. When asked what advice to give aspiring photographers he said “look after your neighbour, have their interest at heart; study, understand and act according to your conscience and to ethical principles”. I think if more people applied that practice to life in general the world would be in a much better state than it is in now.

  1. AHHH! There's a bonus back issue with this one?! Now I really need a copy. I haven't read Yen in ages. The first issue I ever read was a photo issue a well, just before they started to fill in (to some extent) Russh's shoes (after Russh went dressed down luxe).

That made no sense, but I mean to say thank you for alerting me about the double issue thing. I'm definitely going to try and buy it when I get a chance. 🙂

    1. You're welcome! When I bought it it was all packaged up so I had no idea what was included. My original thought was maybe there was a separate photo brochure in addition to the regular magazine. But lo, it was a back issue. It doesn't say anything about the bonus issue on the website so hopefully the promotion is Australia-wide and not just at my local news agency!

  2. Will definitely be checking this one out! I'm going to see Tavi speak at the Melb Writers Fest and I FREAKING LOVE HAIM.
