21st century: art in the first decade

More photos from my visit to the Gallery of Modern Art. The first photo is of a piece called I Never Stopped Loving You by Tracy Emin, and I can’t remember who the second artwork is by but I am on a mission to find out (ETA it is The Light at Lascaux (Cave Entrance) by Spencer Finch). I only had a few frames left on my roll of film so didn’t end up taking many photos of the exhibition. Fittingly, most of the ones I did take were of light installations and could easily be grouped together in this post. If you want to see more photos of the exhibition, I recommend checking out the 21st Century Blog by GoMA.
Also, have you said hi to me on twitter yet? It’s doing my head in but I think I’ve finally got the hang of it!

  1. I love that first installation – it's like graffiti you would find on a wall, but 'light' graffiti. If it was just scrawled on a wall people might not see it as art…. put it into fluro lighting and – voila. Very cool. ♥

  2. I saw this exhibition and apart from a few standout pieces I thought it was very disappointing. I liked the ones you've taken pics of but I expected a bit more of the collection if it was supposed to be a compilation of an entire decade. My favourite was the taxidermy installation near the door by Orion Catts and Ionat Zurr. They are amazing artist pushing so many boundaries between art, science, and technology.

  3. @BlithelyUnaware: Good point. A lot of the artworks were kind of like that. Especially the 'trash' section. I guess a lot of the discourse behind modern art is questioning what constitutes art in the first place.

@SkekTek: I found it a bit overwhelming (I spent three hours in the gallery and still didn't see everything – like the bird room, where was that?!). For a free exhibit, I think they managed to pull together an ample selection of artworks. I also found it very child-friendly – so maybe that's why they chose the works that they did?

@Hannah: haha, my first reflex is to 'like' everything too.

@Amanda: thank you so much. That means a lot, especially coming from someone with a blog like yours!
